Wifi Large Homes

I’ve had a few clients recently with large homes that require more than one wireless access point. When using muliple access points all SSID’s and passwords can be the same, but channels must be different to avoid interference. I try not to use channel 6 at all because it’s the default for most wireless routers. I personally like using channels 2 and 9 because they are rarley used by neghiboring networks. And, if you only have one access point please try to place it in the middle of the house for optimal coverage.

Note: For Verizon Fios subscribers, it is possible to add another wired internet port wherever you have a cable line. You need a special coax adapter which is not sold through Verizon, but is manufactured by the same company that makes Verizon’s modem and routers.

iPhone 4S

Apple released the newest version of their iPhone today. Mine is on a UPS truck awaiting delivery, very glad I don’t have to wait in line at an Apple store. Will update once I’ve had a chance to play around with it. Apple upgraded the hardware inside, but what I’m really excited to test out is the new operating system iOS 5. Unlike what some other websites have to say, this 4S model is a major upgrade in my opinion.

Update: iPhone delivered, but AT&T’s activation servers are not working properly. Can’t use phone until activated. When hundreds of thousands of people are trying to activate their phones at the same time your going to have problems. I don’t mind waiting a few more hours, but it looks like there are quite a few pissed off iPhone owners today.

Second Update: Yes, the new 4S does everything a little faster. Webpages and navigation map load faster. The screen has a yellower tone that isn’t so hard on your eyes. The new iOS and iCloud are brilliant. Just remember to save your data before upgrading an older iPhone to iOS 5. The update will erase everything including text messages, pictures and contacts.

Windows 8

The Windows 8 developer preview is now available from microsoft.com.  This is a pre-beta version which anyone can download for free and install on their desktop or laptop.  I spent a few hours working with it today and can say that it’s the most significant change to Windows in the last twenty years.  You still have the tradational style desktop, but upon startup there is a whole new “metro style” interface and start menu.  Microsoft has made the next version of windows look like a giant mobile phone.  I really do believe this is the future of operating systems, but most normal home and office users are going to be freaked out at first.  Right now the developer preview is not stable for everyday use, but I’m sure the beta and final release will be much better.  If you have an empty spare hard drive don’t be afraid to download and install. Very exciting stuff, but I’m going to stick with OS X for now.
