Sonos Wireless Music System

Turn off that old FM radio forever!

Recently I’ve had a few customers ask me about the new Sonos music players. They are great sounding products and are easy to install. Highly recommend especially if you already have an iPhone or iPad. With this technology it’s possible to have a multi room system setup within minutes. No wires to run.

If you already have an in-wall speaker system this is a great add-on for your home or business. Please contact ZTech for pricing.

Mountain Lion

Apple is going to release their new operating system called “Mountain Lion” this summer. It’s probably not going to look any different than Lion, but there will be new applications and features. Normally Apple waits about two years in-between system updates, but with Windows 8 coming later this year they did not want to remain silent. Here is a quick list of Apple’s recent systems: (many programs require 10.6 or newer)

  • 10.5 Leopard (2007)
  • 10.6 Snow Leopard (2009)
  • 10.7 Lion (2011)
  • 10.8 Mountain Lion (2012)

New iPad

New iPad available March 16th! Apple doubled the screen resolution. This will keep you from having to zoom and scroll around when viewing web pages. There are other improvements like processor, battery and 4G, but in my opinion the screen is the most important. The official name is “new iPad”.

Please Backup

I recently had a small business with a hard drive failure. They did not have a backup. It cost them lots of time and money. Don’t let this happen to you. Every file needs to be saved in two separate places. It’s also a good idea to have an offsite backup incase of theft or fire.

Wifi Large Homes

I’ve had a few clients recently with large homes that require more than one wireless access point. When using muliple access points all SSID’s and passwords can be the same, but channels must be different to avoid interference. I try not to use channel 6 at all because it’s the default for most wireless routers. I personally like using channels 2 and 9 because they are rarley used by neghiboring networks. And, if you only have one access point please try to place it in the middle of the house for optimal coverage.

Note: For Verizon Fios subscribers, it is possible to add another wired internet port wherever you have a cable line. You need a special coax adapter which is not sold through Verizon, but is manufactured by the same company that makes Verizon’s modem and routers.

*New wireless 802.11ac routers and access points will be released towards the end of 2012.

iPhone 4S

Apple released the newest version of their iPhone today. Mine is on a UPS truck awaiting delivery, very glad I don’t have to wait in line at an Apple store. Will update once I’ve had a chance to play around with it. Apple upgraded the hardware inside, but what I’m really excited to test out is the new operating system iOS 5. Unlike what some other websites have to say, this 4S model is a major upgrade in my opinion.

Update: iPhone delivered, but AT&T’s activation servers are not working properly. Can’t use phone until activated. When hundreds of thousands of people are trying to activate their phones at the same time your going to have problems. I don’t mind waiting a few more hours, but it looks like there are quite a few pissed off iPhone owners today.

Second Update: Yes, the new 4S does everything a little faster. Webpages and navigation map load faster. The screen has a yellower tone that isn’t so hard on your eyes. The new iOS and iCloud are brilliant. Just remember to save your data before upgrading an older iPhone to iOS 5. The update will erase everything including text messages, pictures and contacts.

Windows 8

The Windows 8 developer preview is now available from microsoft.com.  This is a pre-beta version which anyone can download for free and install on their desktop or laptop.  I spent a few hours working with it today and can say that it’s the most significant change to Windows in the last twenty years.  You still have the tradational style desktop, but upon startup there is a whole new “metro style” interface and start menu.  Microsoft has made the next version of windows look like a giant mobile phone.  I really do believe this is the future of operating systems, but most normal home and office users are going to be freaked out at first.  Right now the developer preview is not stable for everyday use, but I’m sure the beta and final release will be much better.  If you have an empty spare hard drive don’t be afraid to download and install. Very exciting stuff, but I’m going to stick with OS X for now.
